this was also the first real Rocky Mountain Pass I ever rode, on a transcontinental ride , just after finishing US high school. I remember it as the high point in every way of that summer. I took no pictures on that ride, because i was convinced that pictures could never do justice to the experience or the live view. All that is still true, but i don't let it stop me from taking pictures anymore. Actually i spend a lot of time walking around next to the road looking for the perfect shot, and i carry my gps with me. This is reflected in the "ride statistics". There are various great short summit walks in this tundra landscape.
Every time i rode this since, the weather has been completely different, so that it's actually difficult to connect the experiences from the different rides together. This year the weather here is often unusually cool and moist to rainy. There are notable exceptions to this pattern because of the wild swings that have become the norm just about everywhere. This time, I just made it back down before a major downpour.
