Der künstliche See (Speicherbecken oder Speichersee, auch Geester See genannt) wurde in den 1980er Jahren als Kühlwasserbecken für das 12km entfernte stillgelegte Kernkraftwerk Emsland (bis 2023 aktiv) auf dem ehemaligen Staatsforst Lingen "Biener Sand" und "Geester Sand" erbaut. Der See ist ca. 2km lang und an der breitesten Stelle 1,3 km breit.
