Der Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (NOK; internationale Bezeichnung Kiel Canal, in Deutschland bis 1948 auch Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal) verbindet die Nordsee (Elbmündung) mit der Ostsee (Kieler Förde). Im Jahre 1887 erfolgte die Grundsteinlegung und 1895 die Eröffnung der kleinen Doppelschleusen in Brunsbüttel und Holtenau. Die großen Doppelschleusen in Brunsbüttel und Holtenau wurden 1914 eröffnet. Der Nord-Ostsee-Kanal ist eine Bundeswasserstraße und die meistbefahrene künstliche Seeschifffahrtsstraße der Welt.
