The best hike in the Trossachs? 🤔

After Cruach Ardrain and Ben Tulaichean the previous day, I was interested to see how I would fare on another substantial day of hillwalking.

I drove over to Arrochar to explore the Arrochar Alps. The big draw for me was the Corbett known as The Cobbler, a mountain with a profile like no other! I was also aiming to bag the Munros of Beinn Ime and Ben Narnain, which would provide a good fitness test overall!

With it being a popular route, fantastic weather and a midday start for me (!), I had a job finding a parking spot. After a bit of driving around, I found a decent layby on the A83. It would add about 2 km to my route, however the walk up alongside Loch Long was a very scenic start.

I found an inconspicuous woodland path that led steeply up through the forest by a stream. There were some nice pools which would be great for a dip if I was on the way down!

This was not the tourist route 😄 I eventually emerged from the forest and caught a glimpse of The Cobbler's unmistakable profile. I continued up the grassy southeast ridge, where the views down the length of Loch Long were so good, I had to sit down and have a break to take it in.

The walking on the undulating ridge was steady but the soon became more interesting as the Cobbler loomed above me. The path wound up around the south summit, a massive rock known as Arthur's Seat.

There are some great rock climbs here, but I will have to return another day for them. I reached the summit area and saw a few people attempting to thread the Needle. This is the true summit of the mountain, which requires crawling through a hole and an exposed little scramble.

After a quick break, I decided to have a look at it. It was actually not too difficult, I just took my time and with careful hand and foot placements I was soon on the summit. This is probably the most interesting summit I have reached in the UK. 😁

A few other hikers watching me also decided to have a go at threading the needle. 👍 This was the highlight of the day, but there was plenty more interest to come.
