Today I walked on 2 “Tienweg” roads.
There are currently about 55 known historical “Tienweg ” roads in the Netherlands. Without exception, these are located in the river area of the Central Netherlands. Almost all of them lie within a kilometer. of a peat stream or river and run parallel to it. Along the Hollandse IJssel, for example, there are 13, and along the Lek, 10. It therefore seems likely that tithe roads served a function in water management, especially in areas where drainage became problematic due to the subsidence of the peat soil. It is assumed that many of these roads were constructed during the period of land reclamation or relatively shortly thereafter. Consequently, the construction of most Tienweg roads can be dated between 1100 and 1500.
