Today we walk the centurie old paths, paths made in as early as 12-13 century. The Bloemendaalseweg in Gouda is a very old reclamation road, constructed in the Middle Ages (probably around the 12th or 13th century). It is one of the oldest polder roads in the area and was used to reclaim the marshy peatlands north of the city. Winterdijk is one of the oldest paths to and from Gouda. It was mentioned as early as 1359. The path is situated on a dike that was constructed to ensure that the reclaimed land behind the Gouwe would not be flooded during high tide. The Winterdijk was given this name because the highest water levels of a river are often reached in winter, making the dike necessary at that time. Until the 1950s, the Winterdijk was very rural, with a few houses, market gardens, and farms. Due to the construction of the Bloemendaal Quartier, a large part of the Winterdijk was lost. What’s left is a part going through the city from Van Bergen IJzendoornpark, following the railway line, and the second part over the polder, going through wonderful Dutch nature Both of these roads seem lots of changes throughout centuries, but they are still very much part of today’s Gouda.

Beautiful February day for a walk. To be able to benefit from the sun the most, I decided to follow the sun around the lake, strategically choosing the direction to have the sun in my face the whole time. Plans were made, boots were on, and off I went! I started walking from café ‘t Wapen. I parked my bike and started next to Breevaard in the north direction. After happily finishing 3.5 km, I sat down to soak up some sun and enjoy the view of the lake from Reeuwijkhout. I put Komoot on pause, sat for 15 min, and then it happened: when I decided to start walking, I discovered that Komoot had stopped my route. Pretty annoying considering I wanted to make a nice circle around the lake. … Lucky - only that, and the fact that a road I planned to take to circle around the lake fully was closed, was the only downside of this perfect day. So here you are, I give you a preview of the circle recoded by my watch, not Komoot.
