Yes, dogs are generally permitted on trails within Griffith Park, including the Hogback Loop. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times. Please remember to bring water for your dog and clean up after them.
The Hogback Loop can be hiked year-round. Spring (March-May) offers pleasant temperatures and potentially greener scenery. Fall (September-November) also provides comfortable hiking weather. Summer can be very hot, so an early morning start is crucial if hiking during these months. Winter offers cooler temperatures but can be chilly, especially at higher elevations.

This is a rugged hiking route traversing the hilly landscape of Griffith Park. You should expect varied terrain, including some steep ascents and descents. Certain stretches may be particularly rugged and could require light scrambling, so sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential.
The route offers incredible panoramic views of the city of Los Angeles and the surrounding mountains. Key highlights include the View of Los Angeles Skyline from Griffith Observatory, the View of the Hollywood Sign from Griffith Terrace, and the iconic Hollywood Sign itself. You'll also pass by the Griffith Observatory and the Greek Theater.
Given its 'difficult' rating, significant distance (over 17 km), and rugged terrain with potential scrambling sections, the Hogback Loop is generally not recommended for beginner hikers or families with young children. It's best suited for experienced hikers looking for a challenging urban adventure.

For this challenging hike, it's crucial to bring plenty of water (especially on hot days), sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), sturdy hiking boots, snacks, and a map or GPS device. Given the rugged sections, trekking poles can also be beneficial for stability.
While the trail itself is largely undeveloped, you will pass by the Griffith Observatory, which has restrooms and water fountains. However, it's always best to carry sufficient water for the entire duration of the hike, as facilities may not be conveniently located along all sections of the loop.
The Hogback Loop stands out for its incredible contrast: it offers a challenging, rugged wilderness experience within an urban park, providing unparalleled panoramic views of the sprawling city of Los Angeles, the iconic Hollywood Sign, and surrounding mountain peaks. It's a demanding hike that rewards with truly spectacular vistas.
Astronomers, Snakes & A Big Sign A hot walk across the Hollywood Hills from the Griffith Observatory to Mount Lee, where the Hollywood sign is located. The tracks are well laid out and there are good facilities at the observatory. The views are widespread although the smog around Los Angeles does diminish them. I saw several lizards and a baby rattlesnake enroute! Very enjoyable outing. The Griffith Observatory is also well worth a look (although not recommended to park at the top - parking costs $10/hour!)
