Hüttenmann Statue at Phoenix-West

Highlight • Monument

"The smelting man"

Not just a bronze sculpture, but a work of art with history.

1953, the Hörder Neumarkt was embellished by a new fountain.
At its edge, on a pedestal, stood a steel cooker made of bronze
"The Hüttenmann", created by the Dortmunder Sculptor Friedel Dornberg.
Six years later, he suddenly disappeared from the marketplace. The Hörder citizens spoke of a night and fog action because they were not informed in advance. The hut man was simply "transferred" to the Dortmund Central Station to greet the incoming visitors to the Federal Garden Show. Later he had his place in the Westfalenpark for a few years, overlooking the blast furnaces. It is thanks to the local historian Willi Garth that he was able to return to his old homeland in 2009. About 300 m as the crow flies from the former location on Hörder Neumarkt, he now "guards" the Phoenix West area as a typical figure of a bygone era.

Phoenix West Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Porta Westfalica Bridge in Dortmund-Hörde, built in 2012, is an elegant steel structure with a span of approximately 92 meters – making it the longest of seven steel bridges connecting the Phoenix Park site. It connects the disused industrial area of Phoenix West to Phoenix Lake, spanning the renaturalized Emscher River – a connection between past and present that is both functionally and symbolically significant.

Architecturally, the bridge is striking due to its delicate support system: curved steel struts form a light, almost floating structure resting on massive concrete pillars. This combination consciously reflects the site's industrial heritage – steel and concrete combine to create a modern expression of urban engineering.

A special highlight is the dynamic lighting concept: tunable white lighting has illuminated the structure for several years. During day and night cycles, the bridge gently alternates between cool and warm tones (ranging from approximately 2700K to 6000K), transforming it into an illuminated, sculptural element after dark. The undersides of the steel girders are deliberately highlighted, lending the structure additional sculpturalness and creating a distinctive nighttime silhouette.

Totem with Magpie Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

Shortly after the Bird Woman comes the artwork Totem with Magpie. The "Ghosts of the Emscher Valley" consisted of the two works "Bird Woman" and "Totem with Magpie", which were installed on the southern bank of the Phoenix Lake in Dortmund-Hörde during the exhibition and then moved to the Emscher-Weg on the other side of the lake. A third sculpture "Observer (Oraculum)" was located on the site of the Hansa coking plant in Dortmund-Huckarde and is no longer preserved. Source: emscherkunstweg.de

And again, a place in the Ruhr area that you just have to see. The small detour is worthwhile.
