Saint Audomarus Church Booitshoeke

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sint-Audomaruskerk in Booitshoeke is a historic hall church that was first mentioned in 1135 and has undergone several extensions and restorations since then. In 1690, the tower was rebuilt and the nave was given two aisles, after which a new portal was added in 1735. The church was restored in 1923 to a design by architect Jan-Albert De Bondt and was given a cemetery wall and sacristy. The building, made of brick and characterized by a late Gothic style, has a semi-recessed tower with a curved tent roof and a three-sided closed choir. Inside you will find a 17th-century wooden porch altar, a pulpit from the same period and an organ from 1847, made by Charles-Louis van Houtte. The church is surrounded by a cemetery and is an important historical and architectural landmark in the region.

De Doornpanne

Highlight • Natural

De Doornpanne, together with De Hoge Blekker and De Schipgatduinen, form a 240 ha large dune massif. The central part is owned by Aquaduin and functions as a water collection area. Other parts have the status of Flemish Nature Reserve and are managed by the Flemish Community.
The area comprises a variety of dune types, from shifting dunes and dune grasslands to densely vegetated pans and fixed inland dunes.

The core of the dune complex consists of a broad depression (panne), the vegetation of which forms a mosaic of forest, scrub and open dune vegetation.

Errond is a belt of shifting dunes, including the highest dune top of the Flemish coast (the Hoge Blekker 33 m).

Sint-Laurentius Church Steenkerke

Highlight • Religious Site

A small, rural church located north of the Steengracht canal. The civil cemetery is enclosed by a hedge and is graced by ancient linden trees. The large statue of the Sacred Heart keeps a watchful eye from its pedestal.

Behind the church is a Belgian military cemetery for the fallen of WWI. The cemetery also contains several British graves. Flemish artist and soldier Joe English was once buried in the cemetery before being interred in the crypt of the IJzertoren (Yser Tower).

Steenkerke is also the village where artist and honorary citizen of Veurne, Willem Vermandere, lives.
