Löwenbrunnen (Lion Fountain) at Münster St. Paul, Esslingen am Neckar
The fountain from the former Dominican monastery was first mentioned in 1328 as Predigerbrunnen (Preacher Fountain), as the Dominicans were also called Preachers.
After the Reformation, the former Preacher monastery became an orphanage, then called Fundelhaus. Thus, the fountain was called Fundelbrunnen for a time. Later, it was called Spitalbrunnen, as the old St. Catherine's Hospital was located on the present-day market square until the 19th century. Thus, the name of the fountain changed several times, as did its appearance. The fountain received its baroque form in the 17th century by Michael Rothacker, the master builder of Esslingen.
The lion figure, which holds the Esslingen coat of arms, was added later. Today, it is simply the Löwenbrunnen next to Münster St. Paul. The large octagonal fountain has a diameter of 5 m and is as much a part of the Esslingen cityscape as the silhouette of the Münster, the town church, and the carillon of the Old Town Hall. Yes - the citizens and visitors of Esslingen appreciate this decorative fountain on the market square, which guarantees refreshing water for young and old, as well as for animals in the summer. The basin holds no less than 32 m³ of fresh spring water from the Untere Neckarhaldenquelle.
Fortunately, this fountain was not among the demolition monuments from the previous century, to which many valuable, old buildings fell victim.
