Luzern Gate, Sempach

Highlight • Historical Site

Lucerne Gate, Sempach
The Lucerne Gate is the southern entrance to the city.
The construction history of the Lucerne Gate is largely unknown. However, it can be assumed that the tower-like gate was not part of the original city fortifications. Originally (13th century), the gate was probably made of blocks and was around 7.5 meters high, on which the middle tower was later built. It was divided into ceilings, accessed via stairs and had a pent roof. The latter was replaced by a pyramid roof in the first half of the 17th century. And even later, in the late 18th century and early 20th century, the wall that closes off the tower on the north side was installed and the facade was painted.
