Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal

Highlight • Structure

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 1, 1836 in seven places simultaneously; the construction of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal had begun. During construction, some changes were made to the original design, such as replacing channel tunnels with cuts. Despite some adversities, by 1836 there were already over 3,000 workers on the canal, most of whom were involved in earthworks. The construction of the canal brought a strong revival on the labor market. Saxons and Swabians, Austrians and Italians came to Bavaria in search of work. Up to 9,000 people, including women, were employed on the site. They received a daily wage of 24 to 33 kreuzers. To do this, they worked piecework, sometimes even at night. Half a kreuzer was retained for the care of sick people. Supervision and accommodation proved to be difficult in some cases, and there were also problems with the local population. For this reason, barracks-like buildings were erected for the workers, which had their own infrastructure and their own regulations. The curfew was brought forward to 9 p.m. to curb beer consumption.

The Bavarian State Garden Show 1998 was the eighth state garden show and took place from April 24th to October 4th, 1998 in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate. Under the motto "SinnesWandel" the site of the former sewage treatment plant on the Ludwigskanal was renovated and transformed into a park landscape. Since Neumarkt had applied for the state garden show at short notice, only three years were available for planning and developing the site, not the usual seven.

State Garden Show (LGS)-Park Neumarkt
Many of the most beautiful gardens have been preserved since the State Horticultural Show in 1998 and are only now unfolding their full splendor

Today's LGS park area represents a unique, unmistakable inner-city adventure and recreation center. Walking, marveling, discovering: In the scented and medicinal herb gardens, visitors find their way back to nature, the magnificent shrub beds on the old Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal fascinate with their variety of species and colors and the unique garden entitled "Symbol of Life" is definitely worth a visit.
