Clock Tower of Rio Marina

The Torre degli Appiani, popularly known as the Clock Tower, is the symbol of Rio Marina on the Island of Elba. Tall and hexagonal in shape, it was erected in 1534 at the behest of Giacomo V Appiano as an observation and defense post against pirate raids.
In 1882 the structure was restored and crowned by the characteristic square turret with the clock on three sides that gives it its current name. Today, the tower, managed by the Pro Loco of Rio Marina and Cavo, has been renovated to host cultural and temporary exhibitions during the tourist season.
