One of the largest urban centers on the island, pleasant to visit with excellent restaurants.

The origin of the town dates back to 1600, when the Spaniards built their Fortress on the promontory to defend themselves from predators and to control the passage of military fleets on the Piombino canal from the Island of Elba. Piazza Matteotti and the Porto Azzurro waterfront are the main point of the town. It also highlights the church of San Giacomo Maggiore, located inside the Fort San Giacomo, used as a House of Imprisonment since 1800. For security reasons, the church is not currently open to the public, but , in the coming years, works of complete restoration and safety will be provided which will finally allow access. Behind the town center of Porto Azzurro and its fortress S. Giacomo, we discover the town of Monserrato, where it stands the Spanish Shrine of Our Lady of Monserrato, a place of pilgrimage and excursions, celebrated in the village every 8 September with various initiatives.
