Fehmarnbelt Lightship Berth

Highlight • Monument

A Fehmarnbelt lightship station had existed since 1902, which became necessary due to the increasing traffic in the Kiel Canal, as the beacons on the Fehmarn coast were no longer considered sufficient.

The ship was built from 1906 to 1908 at the Thyen shipyard in Brake on the Weser as a three-masted schooner with emergency sails and first put into service in 1908 as the lightship Außeneider. With interruptions until 1944 it was in the position Außeneider in front of the confluence of the Eider in the North Sea, in the years 1914 to 1916 in position Süderpiep. In 1918/19 it was involved in military operations in the Baltic Sea. In 1931 an engine was installed. From 1945 to 1948 it was used as a guard ship on Minenzwangsweg P 11-P 15 in the German Bight. From 1949 to 1953 it was a replacement lightship for the Amrumbank position (P 15). In 1954 and 1956 there were various conversions. The beacon was reinforced (1000 W / 110 V, 300,000 cd, range 22 nautical miles) and placed on a four-legged mast, a radio beacon and (1959) a radar system and a fog sound system were retrofitted. In the years from 1956 to 1965 it was used as Reserve Holtenau (reserve fire ship) on the positions in Flensburg, Kiel and Fehmarnbelt, in 1961 for a short time on Elbe 1 and then from 1965 to 1984 under its current name on position in the Fehmarnbelt. The predecessor ship in this position was renamed Reserve Kiel.

On March 31, 1984, the Fehmarnbelt was decommissioned as the last German lightship on the Baltic Sea; the position was taken over by an unmanned large barrel.

In the same year, the ship served as the Hatteras film ship for shooting the US feature film The Lightship (based on the story Das Feuerschiff by Siegfried Lenz) on Sylt. 1985 followed a one-year stay in the shipyard. It has been a museum ship since May 1986.

Today the ship belongs to the non-profit association Feuerschiff für Lübeck e.V. and has been in the winter at Behnkai in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in front of the Media Docks on the northern Wall peninsula since autumn 2009. It is kept in good working order and has been making trips in the summer since 1989 to test all facilities under sea conditions; Visits on board are also possible.

And another working classic from Wilhelmine times: The Marstall Bridge with its formerly three structures for railways, cars and pedestrians. The railway structure is decommissioned, the remainder is waiting for a fundamental overhaul, but is difficult because technical requirements and monument protection aspects can not be reconciled so easily.

Krähenteich (Crow Pond)

Highlight • Lake

The Krähenteich is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Located on the Old Town Island, it is just a short walk from the shopping streets. You can sit wonderfully in the grass on the bank and let your gaze wander over the towers and old merchant houses.
Young people like to meet on summer evenings to have a barbecue together, play music and enjoy the summer, but the crow pond is always worth a visit outside of summer too.
