Great Arber Lake

Highlight • Lake

As a cirque lake, the Great Arbersee is a relic from the last ice age. A special feature is the swinging lawn. The oscillating lawns, known as floating islands, are mainly found on the western edge of Lake Arbersee. They cover around two hectares of water and were created in the 19th century when the Arbersee was dammed by more than half a meter for the timber drift. In the process, moor blankets detached from the current lake floor and have been floating on the water surface ever since.

Arbersee Bog

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

On the western shore of the Großer Arbersee, the circular hiking trail leads you through an enchanted moor. Wide wet meadows stretch around the path and dead trees protrude from the green meadow.

Since 1939, the Great Arbersee with its floating mat areas known as “floating islands”, the imposing Arbersee wall and the adjacent mixed mountain forests has been designated a nature reserve. A wonderful piece of nature.

During the last ice age, glacier crests formed several times on the summit of the Großer Arber. As the temperature rose, the glaciers began to slide. On their way down into the valley, they carved out the bed of the Großer Arbersee. Thanks to this glacier work, you can now enjoy the picturesque mountain lake on a circular hike.

Arbersee House

Highlight • Restaurant

In 2016 the old Arberseehaus was demolished. After around two years of construction, the magnificent new building was opened in the summer of 2018. With its rustic charm, the new lake house is in no way inferior to the old one and offers hikers Bavarian cosiness and first-class food.

A short vacation with the "kids" in the Bavarian Forest and just stretching your feet before you can check in at the hotel - that was the plan... It wasn't to be expected that there would be so much snow within half an hour. Before that, all the roads were free of snow and the valleys were grass-green and then …

Großer Arbersee Runde, small circular hiking trail with a beautiful view of the lake and the mountains.

After our Waldspitze tour in the morning, we headed to the Großer Arbersee. We circled it once and were ready for the big tour... (Part 2) 🤪

The trail is mostly in the shade. He's nice to go; sure to be well frequented in good weather from midday onwards.

Today it was only a round with the pedal boat on the lake. Then a walk around the lake and last but not least we paid a visit to the wooden marble run. Not a spectacular hike but all in all a lovely couple of hours.

After a visit to Joska's Glass Paradise in Bodenmais and a stop at the Arberseehaus for refreshments, a walk around the Großer Arbersee lake and its wilderness paradise followed...

I have retroactively arranged the order of the photos.

The images of the parade are from today's opening of the 'Bennofest' and were a wonderful end to the day. 👋

25 years ago I had to lift the stroller over the roots and stones more than I could push it. Now that would no longer be a feat of strength, as the circular path has been "defused"!

Very easy walk, we think the small Arbersee is more beautiful
