Drei Annen Hohne station

Highlight • Rest Area

A very special highlight in the Harz is the old Brocken Railway, which has been running regularly up the highest mountain in the Harz since 1992. This is a so-called "adhesion railway": despite the steep route profile, the railway climbs the summit solely due to the friction between the drive wheels and the rails and does not require any gears or anything similar. This means that the route has the highest station of all German adhesion narrow-gauge railways.

Enough of the technical highlights. Purely from an experience point of view, a train journey like this is of course extremely exciting. If you still prefer to climb to the Brocken by bike, I fully understand. But maybe the Brocken Railway is an option for the rest of the family? Take a look here, there is all the information about the railway: hsb-wr.de/mehr-erfahren/streckennetz/brockenbahn.

Beautiful landscape below the Brocken.
At least almost car-free, but of course tons of hikers.

Brocken Railway Station

Highlight • Rest Area

The HSB (Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) have parked a (red) tank car with extinguishing water on the Brocken for possible accidents. The wagon stands on a trolley, in winter it goes into the valley.
This tank car was only in Drei Annen Hohne and was subsequently marked by the HSB.
It is used solely for the extinguishing agent reserve and is shut down again in winter.

Brocken Summit

Highlight • Summit

The highest peak in the Harz above the tree line. Certainly not the most exciting climb on a mountain bike, but still a must, simply because it's there. ;-)

Spontaneous tour to the Bocken for a sausage on the Brocken

We began our tour in Drei Annen Hohne in cool temperatures and sunshine. We traveled the first few kilometers along the Glashüttenweg. For the last stretch, we took the Brockenstrasse. We then took this road back to Schierke. After a quick stop at Mr. Drube's pharmacy, we returned to Drei Annen Hohne.

Actually, today we were supposed to go somewhere completely different.
But...slept too long early and couldn't get going...😴🙈
So, when hunting for passes, we quickly looked to see what mountains were still reachable in such a short time and were still missing from the list.
There was not much to think about...heading towards Brocken.
I've "conquered" it a few times …

Very nice tour on and around the Brocken 😉 but with this weather 🌞 and completely overcrowded on a Saturday.

The first Brocken tour was planned for today.
The weather forecast got worse and worse as the week progressed.
Around 7 am I got the message from Wernigerode that it was raining cats and dogs and that the driveway might be closed
Lt. Forecast rain from the weatherman from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Shortly before the driveway to the …
