Statens Museum for Kunst

Highlight • Monument

The Danish National Gallery Statens Museum for Kunst (German Staatliches Kunstmuseum) is the largest museum for fine arts in Denmark and is located in the center of the capital Copenhagen. It is subordinate to the Ministry of Culture.

In addition to changing temporary exhibitions, there is also a comprehensive collection consisting of three main collections:

1) The Royal Collection of Painting and Sculpture, which comprises around 2,600 works from 1300 to the present day. A focus of the collection is Danish and Nordic art from 1750 to 1900, including numerous works of art from the Golden Age of Danish painting by painters such as Wilhelm Bendz, Detlev Conrad Blunck, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Constantin Hansen, Christen Købke, Vilhelm Marstrand and Martinus Rørbye, as well as by Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann, who worked in Denmark for a time. The collection also includes works by Titian and Mantegna, Rubens and Rembrandt, and Cornelis Gijsbrechts, as well as by Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, and Robert Smithson. But it also includes modern contemporary works by the Danes Asger Jorn, Per Kirkeby, Elmgreen and Dragset, and Danh Vō.
2) The Royal Collection of Prints comprises 300,000 works (drawings, lithographs, etchings, and other art forms on paper) by Danish and international artists.
3) The Collection of Plaster Casts (Den Kongelige Afstøbningssamling) comprises over 2,000 plaster casts and has been housed in a historic warehouse (Vestindisk Pakhus, Toldbodgade 40) since 1984. The works represented date back to Ancient Egypt. For reasons of economy, the Collection of Plaster Casts is only open on Tuesdays and Sunday afternoons.
