Monument to Nicolaus Copernicus in Torun

In 1853, the people of Torun erected a monument to their most famous offspring, Nikolaus Copernicus, on the market square near the house where they were supposed to be born. Copernicus lived in Torun for many years. In 1807 Napoleon expressed astonishment that there was still no monument. The location of his grave in Frauenburg could not be found at that time. The memorial was financed through donations. The main amount came from the Prussian King Wilhelm IV.

Steine Rühmen Monument (Glorious Stones)

The monument was most likely built around 1912-1919. Its purpose and symbolism have not been clearly explained. According to one version, it commemorates the builders of the Toruń Fortress, while another claims it was built in the free time of one of the Prussian regiments stationed at the Toruń garrison. There is also a theory that the monument commemorates a Toruń pilot who died in a plane crash there.

The inscription on the monument literally translates to "Stones Praise," which, combined with excerpts from a speech by Mayor Stachowitz during the unveiling of the monument in December 1915, discovered in press archives, suggests that the monument was erected to honor the soldiers of the German army who defeated the Russian army in 1914.
