View of the IJsselmeer from Andijk

Highlight • Viewpoint

The IJsselmeer is the largest lake in the Netherlands. Today's freshwater lake, artificially created by dyking, consists of a large part of the former Zuiderzee bay between Friesland and Noord-Holland. The word sea has the meaning of "inland lake" in Dutch (as in Low German). The lake is named after its main tributary, the IJssel, which flows into the Ketelmeer tributary below Kampen. The second largest tributary, the Zwarte Water, flows into the connected lake Zwarte Meer.

Dutch Steam Engine Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

In the historic steam lift "Four Noorder Koggen" is now the Dutch Steam Engine Museum. Here, not only steam engines from industry and shipping are exhibited and partly still operated, you also learn a lot about land reclamation. With the pumps in the steam lift, the water was pumped out within the Omringdijk and thus wrested from the sea.

Opening times and further information can be found at stoommachinemuseum.nl/deutsch.

Good asphalt, flat roads, beautiful views - and if you're lucky, sometimes there's no headwind. This is how cycling is fun.

West Frisian Circular Dike

Highlight • Cycleway

During the Middle Ages in North Holland, storm surges caused a lot of peat to disappear into the waves. Lakes were created, the land crumbled and Westflinge, today's West Friesland, was surrounded by water.

To prevent even more land loss, small diked areas were connected by constructing intermediate dikes from the mid-13th century. The ring was closed around 1350. The Omringdijk passes Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Alkmaar, Schagen and Medemblik and has a length of 126 km.

The dike is now maintained as a cultural-historical monument and is recognizable, among other things, by the red posts that are placed at regular distances from each other on the dike. Due to various reclamations, West Friesland is no longer an island and the sea is hard to find along the entire dike.

The stretch between Medemblik and Hoorn still largely borders water and is therefore one of the most beautiful parts. The view from the bike path on top is amazing!

A beautiful tour from Medemblik to Enkhuisen along the coast to the amusement park, there was a lot to see and discover. From there a detour to the small harbor of Enkhuisen. A very beautiful tour

Today we went along the coast at the IJsselmeer from Onderdijk to Enkhuizen, absolutely wonderful on the dike cycle path.
In Enkhuizen there is a zoo right on the way, which invites you to visit it free of charge. Coffee and cake are also excellent here and 100% of the proceeds are used for the animals. All helpers work for …

A really nice tour, with the right people it's twice as much fun 😎

We actually wanted to take a break in our favorite teahouse "de libel" again. But it was so full that we couldn't get a seat.
So we continued on to Enkhuizen. There we took a break at the old harbor.
Then we had to go back because Woddy was alone in the strange holiday home. 🐕🏠

We really didn't have time to rush today...

...so our last tour was a very leisurely one 😊.
We were "under steam" at the Steam Machine Museum, an anchor point on the European Industrial Heritage Route (similar to our brickworks 👍), visited Medemblik 🛍👛 for a second time, and said goodbye to the IJsselmeer 💦💙 with a heavy heart.

Today a very nice bike ride along the coast from Medemblik to Enkhuizen.
We started our tour from a parking lot in Medemblik and drove on/on the dike to Enkhuizen.
After visiting the Zuiderzeemuseun and a coffee break in the beautiful city center of Enkhuizen, we started our way home to Medemblik.

were on the way back to Bovenkarspel, then my cell phone failed 🙁 and the rest of the entire route 47 km had to run without Komoot 😊
