Sacred Way - Monte Cavo

Highlight • Trail

The Via Sacra is a beautiful paved road from the Roman era that climbs to the top of Monte Cavo. Today it is famous above all for the panoramic point to which it leads, called "Occhialone", from which you can enjoy a suggestive panorama that simultaneously embraces the two lakes in the area, that of Albano and that of Nemi.

This mountain was so important because on its top stood the temple of Jupiter of Latium. Every year, at the temple, the Feriae Latinae were held, great celebrations in honor of this divinity, particularly important in Lazio. The road that went up the mountain to reach this sacred place therefore took the name of Via Sacra. And this same road was also traveled by the victorious generals who celebrated their triumph: for this reason it was also known as the triumphal road.

The temple of Giove Laziale, however, was replaced in the Middle Ages by a hermitage dedicated to St. Peter. This later became a monastery and in more modern times even a hotel, where various important people seem to have stayed.

Today Monte Cavo is an important radio and television transmission center. And in fact on its top there are essentially only antennas, repeaters and various pylons.

View from Maschio delle Faete

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Maschio delle Faete (beech woods), 956 meters, for only 6 meters is the highest peak of the three that make up the ring of the Monti delle Faete, which includes on the left MonteCavo (950 meters) and on the right Colle Iano (928 meters), and it is therefore also the highest point of the Alban Hills. The three peaks, now luxuriantly covered with chestnut and oak woods, very anciently constituted the internal caldera of the Lazio volcano, extinct tens of thousands of years ago, a caldera that sank north towards Rome: from this point it is possible to see the so-called "Campi d'Annibale" just below the top, and, in the distance, East Rome, due to the collapse of the caldera. Behind it are the Pratoni del Vivaro, surrounded in turn by the peaks that formed the external caldera of the Lazio Volcano: Mount Artemisio and Maschio d'Ariano, up to Tusculum.

The current Monte Cavo was a sacred mountain for the pre-Roman peoples of Lazio as on its summit (950 m above sea level) stood the Temple of Iuppiter Latiaris, the cult of Latin Jupiter united these peoples and therefore the temple was a pilgrimage destination.
The road route started from Rome and branched out for over 30 kilometres, first passing through Lake Nemi, where Diana Nemorensis was worshiped and from here the road reached the base of the sacred mountain from which the basalt-paved road began, still today excellently preserved and clearly visible, known precisely by the name of Via Sacra or Via Trionfale, which with a route of 6 km from the base of the Mount reached the Temple.

The route is mainly through the woods; near the crest of Lake Albano, the path is very damaged, with sections requiring walking.

MTB ride. A very short stretch of asphalt was necessary to go and have a coffee with zabaglione in Rocca di Papa. The rest was just a dirt road in the woods and an infinite number of singletracks. Perfect ride in this heat. Garmin elevation gain 1200m

Nice circular route, also technical and full of ups and downs, where I touched the tops of the 3 hills that dominate Rome, representing the internal Caldera of the former Lazio volcano. I would have liked to complete it with a route that, in addition to the Giuliana Descent, could also include the Giovannone Descent, therefore going up from the …
