The Maschio delle Faete (beech woods), 956 meters, for only 6 meters is the highest peak of the three that make up the ring of the Monti delle Faete, which includes on the left MonteCavo (950 meters) and on the right Colle Iano (928 meters), and it is therefore also the highest point of the Alban Hills. The three peaks, now luxuriantly covered with chestnut and oak woods, very anciently constituted the internal caldera of the Lazio volcano, extinct tens of thousands of years ago, a caldera that sank north towards Rome: from this point it is possible to see the so-called "Campi d'Annibale" just below the top, and, in the distance, East Rome, due to the collapse of the caldera. Behind it are the Pratoni del Vivaro, surrounded in turn by the peaks that formed the external caldera of the Lazio Volcano: Mount Artemisio and Maschio d'Ariano, up to Tusculum.

The Via Montecavo-Madonnella is beautiful to walk. Today (14/3/22) I found it interrupted because it was full of cut branches due to deforestation, which has continued since last year. Too bad, however, that, in addition to the sign: "Beginning of the Construction Site", there was no one on the spot, and I had to go back!

Done two weeks ago! As suggested, it is a construction site for tree cutting, but the passage was all in all free
