Palermo – Start of the Magna Via Francigena

Highlight • Historical Site

Palermo, Sicily's northern port, is one of the most important cities on the island. The beating heart of the city abounds with monuments and places to visit, linked to a rich history of dominations: Greek-Byzantine, Islamic and Norman-Christian. The Magna Via Francigena starts in front of the Palermo cathedral: a trek that connects it to Agrigento.

Quattro Canti (Four Corners)

Highlight • Historical Site

Quattro Canti (Piazza Vigliena). Although small in size, one of the most famous or perhaps the most famous square in Palermo. At the heart of the square's construction is the number 4, which is a powerful symbol in culture and religion. It is situated at the intersection of four historical districts of the city, to which are assigned four baroque palaces delineating the four directions of the world, four geographic directions. On the facade of the palaces there are four sculptures personifying the four seasons, the four Spanish kings of Sicily and the four patron saints of Palermo.

San Cataldo Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Built after 1160, this small church blends harmoniously elements of Nordic and Arabian architecture, typical of the Norman period of Sicily: three graceful, bright red domes float on a simple rectangular cube facing east.

Church of San Domenico

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of San Domenico is one of the most important baroque monuments. It stands on a large square with a façade adorned with stucco statues and flanked by two high bell towers.
The facade was built in 1726 after the opening of a new square.
The Baroque façade was decorated with stucco work in the 18th century and decorated with Biliemi stone columns. Great!!!
In front of the church is time for a cappuccino and you can enjoy the flair.

March 28, 2022,Palermo 🇮🇹🏛️🥾
So, finally Palermo 🇮🇹. Expectations weren't particularly high, especially after seeing huge piles of rubbish on the drive into town. So get out of the hotel 🏨 and let it drift through the alleys of the old town. And what can I say, Palermo surprised us positively with its lively life, great markets and impressive buildings 🏛️.
