De Windhond Windmill (Woerden)

During the construction of the windmill De Windhond, the older mill, which stood on the same site, was demolished by order of Jan Wellen and Katrina Kellink. The Greyhound was equipped with a steam engine in 1877 and a gas engine in 1901. The mill was restored in 1984 and is still in use as a flour mill. The gas engine can still be used, although the mill is usually powered by the wind.

The interior of the mill is largely authentic. The penultimate miller lived in the house at the bottom of the mill until October 2011.

The mill was owned by the Hoogendoorn family since 1876, has been owned by the municipality of Woerden since 1977 and can be visited on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Until 2010, the Woerdense VVV was housed in the building at the bottom of the mill. Since 1 May 2018, (the living area of) the mill has been permanently inhabited again by the miller of De Windhond on duty.

July 27, 2024,Van Bodegraven naar Woerden langs de Rijn

Nice trip from station to station on the towpath from Bodegraven to Woerden. You do have to share the towpath with cyclists, but fortunately there were not very many and they all called well in advance. Nice to end in Woerden and have a drink on a terrace in the historic center.
