Arena dello Stretto, Reggio Calabria
Panorama of the Arena dello Streto
The beauty towards the sea
Built where the Porto Salvo pier once stood, destroyed by the 1908 earthquake, the Arena dello Stretto is a modern theater heavily inspired by the ancient tradition of Magno-Greek arena theatre.
The arena offers a unique view of the street and Sicily. It is dedicated to Senator Ciccio Franco. Numerous national and international events take place there. At its top, almost in the water, there is a cippo marmoreo (marble arch) built by Bonfiglio and dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele III. dedicated, since the pier of Porto Salvo was the first Italian place to which he went immediately after his proclamation as king. Although built in the 20th century, the arena combines all the aspects that make Greek-style theater unique.

8 March Roundabout

Highlight • Monument

The Rotonda 8 Marzo is a message of solidarity to distance oneself from the insulting gesture that Marcianò fell victim to, showing once again how much it is still necessary to work to create a culture of gender equality and non-violence to spread, which is necessary in a society that wants to define itself as civil.

Reggio Calabria
The origins of the city are ancient: it was founded in 734 BC. Founded by the Greeks from Euboea, during the great Greek period it experienced a period of great splendor under the tyrant Anasilao, who united the two cities of the strait (Rhegion and Zancle, today Messina). In the 15th century it was conquered by the Bourbons. However, these left no obvious traces in Reggio, which unfortunately cannot be said of the earthquakes of 1873 and 1908, which completely destroyed it. The place founded by the Greeks was never left by the Reggians, who began the reconstruction with a lot of patience and commitment: it was during this period that most of the archaeological finds from Roman and Greek times came to light, such as e.g. B. the famous bronze statues of Riace, now in the MAaRC, the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria.

Basilica Cattedrale di Reggio Calabria Maria SS Assunta, Reggio Calabria
Reggio Calabria Cathedral
The first church was built around 300 AD on the ruins of a Greek temple to Apollo. It has been expanded and remodeled over the centuries. Completely destroyed by the Messina earthquake in 1908, the cathedral was rebuilt in neo-Romanesque style.
The main facade is divided by four towers. The statues of St. Paul and St. Stephen are on the left and right of the portal on the outside staircase. The church building was completed in 1928, the 28 m high campanile in 1931.
