Spitz on the Danube

Highlight • Settlement

Spitz an der Donau is one of the most picturesque villages in the Wachau and an absolute must for any visitor to the region. It is located directly on the Danube and is surrounded by terraced vineyards. A worthwhile destination for a tour. You can linger here for a while, there is a lot to discover! A very beautiful, tranquil place with some sights.

The narrow alleys and old houses in Renaissance and Baroque style convey a journey back in time to the Middle Ages. The noteworthy town hall square is a central meeting point with charming pubs and shops. Hinterhaus Castle ruin, a medieval castle ruin, towers above the village and offers spectacular views of the Wachau.

Spitz is idyllically situated between the Danube and the famous vineyards of the Wachau, offering one of the most beautiful backdrops in the region. The village is perfectly suited as a destination or stopover for a bike tour. The place combines nature, history, and enjoyment in a unique way.

Vineyards Near St. Michael

Highlight • Natural

The Danube Cycle Path through the Wachau is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in Europe. History, culture and nature are very close to each other in this enchanting region. Here you will cycle on well-developed cycle paths through a breathtakingly beautiful and varied landscape along the blue Danube, through vineyards and forests and discover historic buildings and monuments that tell of an eventful and exciting past. Enjoy culinary delicacies such as the Wachau apricot dumplings en route and taste the famous Wachau wines in a cozy wine bar.

Wachau Vineyards Route

Highlight • Cycleway

The route, with moderate climbs, leads directly through the vineyards. The Danube flows some distance from the cycle path in this section, a little further down in the valley. A magnificent sight, with very, very beautiful scenery. 👌

For me, one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, sections of this route through the Wachau. 🚴🏻‍♂️👌 A region with a rich and fascinating history. Simply a great tour, a relaxed bike ride while taking in the beautiful views and amazing perspectives. Highly recommended!

Wachau Vineyard Terraces

Highlight • Structure

This section is a highlight of any cycling tour along the Danube – not only because of the impressive ruins where Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned, but also because of the picturesque landscape, which can be experienced particularly intensely here. Between the historic walls and the vineyard terraces of the Wachau stretching across the slopes, a backdrop unfolds that invites you to linger. Those traveling by bike should definitely allow a little extra time for this section – for views, stories, and a sip of regional wine.

Danube Valley in the Wachau

Highlight • River

The Danube Valley in the Wachau region is an absolute highlight and rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A tour through this area is an unforgettable experience: I've driven the route several times now and discover new impressions and perspectives with every trip. The combination of the Danube panorama, historical sites, and picturesque landscape makes the tour unique. Absolutely top-notch and highly recommended – an experience you simply have to have!

70 kilometers from Dürnstein via Mautern to Melk and back.

Powerful leg-work through the blooming Wachau 🌸🌸🌸

It really makes your heart sing ❤️

The weather forecast for today was much better than the last few days, and Melk Abbey was, of course, still on our "list" (which doesn't actually exist; we decide spontaneously, day by day).

But we at least had it in the back of our minds that we should go there.
So, we went there on the north side and back …

A leisurely round on both sides of the Danube. Finally a coffee break in Melk. A glorious day

Today is the early Mother's Day surprise. Tomorrow is not supposed to be as consistent as today, so today we cycle and eat far too much. The cycle path was busy, but it was nice to ride.

After my 7-peak tour, today's schedule is a gentle one. We're cycling into the Wachau region. Not a breath of wind slows us down, and we're rewarded with apricot blossoms—it couldn't be more beautiful.

Today we went through the Wachau on the Danube Cycle Path. This weekend is the start of the apricot blossom and of course we had to use it. Very nice bike paths and always the blooming trees. The ruins of the rear building were also on the way, so we climbed up there on foot. It is very worth seeing.

Yesterday I had to break off the tour after only 20 km due to thunderstorms. Today the round with M drove the Danube cycle path 5 and 6 left and right of the Danube. The Dürnstein side is completely overrun by bikers. On the Rossatz side it is much quieter and I think the landscape is more beautiful.
