Innerste Dam

Highlight • Lake

The Innerste Dam is a dam in the Innerste region, located in the northwest of the Harz Mountains between Langelsheim, Wolfshagen, and Lautenthal. It was built between 1963 and 1966 and belongs to the Harz Waterworks. Its purposes are drinking water supply, flood protection, low-water elevation, and power generation. The average annual discharge of the Innerste Dam is 60 million cubic meters.

Innerste Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

If you drive around the Innerstetalsperre, you will always come to beautiful swimming areas and beaches, where you can take a break. On hot days you can refresh yourself while bathing in the cool water of the reservoir.

If you fancy a longer break at the dam and would like to try other water sports such as rowing, surfing or sailing, you can spend the night in the campsite by the lake.

Structures

The dam of the Innerste Dam is an earth dam with a multi-layered, external asphalt concrete seal. It has an inspection passage in the water-side hearth wall along its entire length. In front of the water-side foot of the dam there is a flood overflow tower, into which the bottom outlet is also integrated. The water from the Innerste Dam can be pumped via a 4.6 km long pressure pipe to the Grane Dam to the east, where it can be used to treat drinking water. From 2003 to 2005 the dam was completely drained and the asphalt seal and bottom outlet in particular were renovated; the construction work was completed in September 2005.

The old diabase quarry at Heimberg near Wolfshagen in the Harz Mountains can look back on more than 100 years of operational history (1885 to 1986). An eye-catcher is the so-called breeding rock, which as a quarry residue made of inferior rock as an inselberg towers over the quarry floor by around 50 meters. A nice example of a successful renaturation of a former industrial plant.

Lautenthal

Highlight • Settlement

The mining town of Lautenthal owes its existence to a miner named Kaspar Bitter, who discovered a rich ore vein on the Kranichsberg around 1530. With some of the silver ore he had found, he went to the then sovereign, who paid him handsomely and prompted him to start mining in the valley of the lute. Three and a half centuries passed, during which every man in the village was connected with the mining industry, its changing ups and downs, its rare times of prosperity and frequent times of need, for better or for worse. Most of the mines ceased operations in 1930/31.
Today a state-recognized climatic health resort in the middle of the Harz Nature Park

May 15, 2026,Low Budget Gravel Build Testfahrt
With a bit of planning and a lot of tinkering, I built a low-budget gravel bike from a 20-year-old trekking/cross bike – with bullhorn handlebars and a clear focus on road performance, but on a modern technical level.

Today was the first test ride to see what the bike can do and if it rides as I imagined.
