Angelstein Rock and Memorial Plaque

Highlight • Natural Monument

The so-called Angelstein is on a hiking trail that leads from the Waldrennach district northwards to Neuenbürg. It lies on the eastern slope of the 556-metre-high Sägkopf, a wooded hill between the Enz valley to the north and west and the Grössel valley to the east. The striking group of rocks is formed from exposed rock from the uppermost layer of the middle Bunter sandstone, the upper scree horizon that was exposed by the eroding effect of the Grösselbach and glacial soil flow. In front of the exposed rock are individual boulders, under whose piled-up stone slabs there are cave-like rooms into which the inhabitants of the surrounding area fled during war. According to the inscription, in 1796 during the French Revolutionary Wars they invaded the Enz valley and devastated everything; a child was even born at the Angelstein. (Source: City of Neuenbürg)
The memorial plaque bears the following inscription:
"Here was born
GOTTFRIED BURKHARDT
on January 1st, 1796
at the time when people
fled from the French
warriors".
Later Sägmüller
in Gösseltal"
Municipality of Waldrennach
The area around the Angelstein and Sägkopf is still a mystical place today. You get the feeling that many animals lost their lives in the large forest clearing at the Sägkopf and their spirit can be felt.

Angelstein Rock Formation

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Angelstein is a group of rocks in the northern Black Forest near Neuenbürg. It is located on the eastern slope of the saw head. Some of the blocks of medium colored sandstone lie on top of one another in such a way that they are habitable and were used for these purposes in times of need. The rock group is protected as a natural monument "rock group Angelstein".
