Levada Through Banana Plantations

Something else - in the midst of banana cultures on a Levada run, that is the levada is covered with large plates :-)

The Levada dos Piornais extends surprisingly far into the city of Funchal. Since this tour is probably intended for those who are not going on the Levada for a cozy city tour, but rather are looking for "airy" passages with a lot of depth, you should, if possible, get on the Levada on the outskirts of the city, in the Quebradas district. We take bus number 24 and get off where the road passes under the motorway. Following the black signs with “Levada” written on them, we turn left, facing north, parallel to the highway. Where the road curves to the right down into the valley, we can enter the levada on the right.

For the first few kilometers the levada is covered with concrete and annoyingly clattering metal plates. Its course takes us through numerous banana plantations. Finally we reach the outskirts of the city, where the levada finally continues openly and we have to walk on the pleasantly wide boundary wall. This first section is still officially marked as a tourist walkway. However, she is already surprisingly exposed to this very quickly. Most of these exposed sections are well secured with railings. The most enjoyable part of the tour soon follows: The Levada crosses a vertical rock face, for which several tunnels and bridges were created. In the tunnels and also along the rock face you often have to bend down or move to the other side of the levada.

Further into the valley there are increasingly exposed areas where there are no longer any railings. Since the levada wall is still pleasantly wide, passing it is not difficult for those without heights and is associated with a pleasant adrenaline rush.

On the promenade you can walk along the sea. In some places it is steep uphill and down, otherwise everything is easy to walk and there are many beautiful views 🌴🌺🌸☀️
There are many benches that invite you to rest and where you can enjoy the view of the sea 🌊
