We always wanted to go to Merseburg, the cathedral and university town on the Saale in southern Saxony-Anhalt. Since the city was badly damaged in the last war, there is no longer a closed core. But there are some wonderful buildings and of course the Dom Ensemble, which is really worth seeing.
