Carreiro do Mosteiro Beach

Highlight • Beach

Berlenga's only beach is a real treasure. With its soft sands and perfect entry into the sea, without any rocks, it invites you to take a relaxing dip in incredibly crystal clear turquoise waters, where it is easy to see fish swimming. For added peace of mind, it also has lifeguards on duty.

On the hillside, the Misericórdia Monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome once stood, dating back to the 16th century, hence the name of this paradisiacal setting.

Farol do Duque de Bragança

Highlight • Monument

At the highest point of the island stands the Berlenga lighthouse, officially called the Duke of Braganza Lighthouse. Built in 1841, it was initially powered by olive oil, then by petroleum, until it was electrified in 1926. It has been operating automatically since 1985 and has been powered by solar energy since 2001.

The view is breathtaking: you can see the Estelas and the Farilhões and, on clear days, the Sintra mountains to the south, the Montejunto mountains behind Peniche and the Nazaré promontory to the north.

The Fort of São João Baptista is located on the island of Berlenga Grande.

Its military structure is the most significant construction in the Berlengas and the most iconic element of the archipelago.

It is not known exactly when the Fort of São João Baptista was built, but there is some unclear evidence that indicates that a fortification existed there since the 16th century.

The Berlengas are 3 islands off Peniche, a nature reserve. The fort is a short hike away, with 600 steps to climb. A great, worthwhile trip.

From Peniche, you can book a boat tour to Berlengas Island. The trip takes about 45 minutes, and you shouldn't be prone to seasickness. Once there, you're immediately struck by the pristine beauty of the island, composed of pink granite that contrasts beautifully with the blue water. I booked the snorkeling tour.
