At the highest point of the island stands the Berlenga lighthouse, officially called the Duke of Braganza Lighthouse. Built in 1841, it was initially powered by olive oil, then by petroleum, until it was electrified in 1926. It has been operating automatically since 1985 and has been powered by solar energy since 2001.
The view is breathtaking: you can see the Estelas and the Farilhões and, on clear days, the Sintra mountains to the south, the Montejunto mountains behind Peniche and the Nazaré promontory to the north.
