Kaponier, Vechta

Highlight • Historical Site

The Caponier is Vechta's landmark.

You'll find it a little off the busy shopping street behind the market square.

Along with the armory, it's the only remaining fortification building of the former citadel. In this very special building, with its long and dark history, you can now experience art from the region up close.

The massive, pentagonal caponier was actually built in 1705 as an outer fortification and prison for the citadel, directly above the Moorbach stream. Its walls are only about 30 centimeters thick on the west side – and this had strategic reasons, especially during the wars of the time. In the event of an enemy occupation, the people of Vechta could have destroyed the building themselves with a few well-aimed cannon shots from the citadel.

Primarily because of its special atmosphere, the Caponier is now a popular exhibition space for art of all kinds. The Kaponier Art Association regularly allows artists to show their works within these quaint walls.

Exhibitors include renowned artists from Germany and abroad.

Museum in the Arsenal

Highlight • Historical Site

The "Museum in the Armory" is located in the citadel. The old armoury tells stories from the Bronze Age, the Middle Ages, the Thirty Years' War and the recent past as a prison until 1991 on three barrier-free floors. Numerous exhibits to touch and participate in make the visit a unique experience.

Zitadellenpark Vechta

Highlight • Historical Site

The knights meet here once a year – in the citadel park, Vechta's green lung and resort, just a few steps away from the hustle and bustle of the district town's shopping street. Because during the Burgmannentage, a medieval spectacle, exciting knight fights and a medieval market take place here every year on the last weekend in September. But the Citadel Park in Vechta is also definitely worth a visit on any other day of the year.

In the Castrum Vechtense project, a castle complex is to be built successively on the redesigned citadel park - modeled after the former Vechta Castle.
It is a medieval three-island castle complex of 11/12. Century arise on a roughly 2-acre section of the citadel park model - with main, front and side castle and many buildings. The basis for the reconstruction are archaeological and historical research
in northern Germany.
To visit today are the castle tower (fee) and the garden
