The Balze of the Valdarno

Highlight • Canyon

They remember, with due proportions, the most famous American canyons, but if you come from these parts, these too have their particular charm. The Balze del Valdarno, also known as Smotte, are a characteristic geotope, consisting of sands, clays and stratified gravels, up to a hundred meters high, of diversified shapes, interspersed with deep gorges. These are the result of the erosion of the lake's Pliocene sediments of the Upper Valdarno by atmospheric agents and rivers because the Valdarno was a lake.
In addition to my photo, in order to give an idea of what I am, I am attaching one of Marco Faccioli.

The Church of S. Maria in Pian di Scò is located on top of the town. Those who walk the road of the Seven Bridges are in front of the Sacred Building with the three apses and the slender bell tower. The imposing Pieve di Scò turns its back on the main road. A quick glance makes us understand that it has recently been restored and after the restoration the various interventions of man and the events undergone by the monument are well read.
This ancient parish church has a great history. Although the precise year of its foundation is ignored, however from the whole of its architecture we can assume that it arose around the year one thousand. The first document in which it is mentioned dates back to 12 March 1008. In that year it was named in a donation made by the noble family Ubertini in favor of the Abbey of Santa Trinita in Alpe.
Another document mentions some land located in the plover of Pian di Scò donated to the church of Gastra. Some historians believed that this Píeve belonged and depended on the Apostolic See, but the documents issued by the Pontiffs Pasquale II (1103), Innocenzo II (1134) and Anastasio IV (1153) confirmed the jurisdiction over this church to the bishops of Fiesole.

Located about halfway along the Setteponti road that leads from Florence to Arezzo, Reggello is a village between the bottom of the Arno valley and the slopes of the Pratomagno mountain ridge. Do not miss the Pieve di S. Pietro a Cascia or the Museum dedicated to Masaccio or, again, the Abbey of Vallombrosa.

Iris Fields of Setteponti

Highlight • Natural

THE WONDERFUL #GIAGGIOLO (or #iris)!

On the #Setteponti, in the direction of #Firenze, at this time of the year, you can admire the fields where the #giaggiolo is grown. Its cultivation began in Tuscany in the mid-1800s, reaching significant production quantities thanks to the demand from French and northern European companies for the use of iris powder in perfumery and distilleries.

The Tuscan product is highly sought after and competitive due to the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of its components.

The typical cultivation areas are the two hilly and mountainous areas of the #Pratomagno Aretino, crossed by the Setteponti, where I took this photo between #Reggello and #PiandiSco ', and of the Florentine Chianti.

Iris is a rustic plant grown on the edge of terraced fields, in soils not suitable for other crops.

Iris is a crop that is an integral part of the Tuscan tradition and an extremely important agri-environmental resource for the local economy, therefore it requires protection for landscape, historical and cultural reasons.
