Very distinctive oak on the edge of the heathland, which somehow reminds of the mystical forests in Tolkien's descriptions.

May 22, 2026,Birkenwald und Heideflächen in der Wahner Heide
Earlier than usual in the morning, a round in the Wahner Heide with start and finish at the parking lot of the Waldlokal Heidekönig in Troisdorf-Spich. Easy paths, partly in the sun, but mostly alternating with light and shade, so the rising temperature was still easy to bear. The nicely located Waldlokal Heidekönig is a good place to stop for …

The expanded exclusion zone seems strange. A finger-thick slowworm was spotted by the side of the path. At the end of the hike, we stopped off at the Heidekönig restaurant in the idyllic atmosphere.

A nice route for hot days, as most of the route runs through the forest. Unfortunately, you don't see much of the Wahner Heide.

Easter outing to the Wahnerheide. With walking sticks through the beautiful, diverse forest area with sand dunes and heather. A stop at the Heidekönig is a must. ☺️

Start: Altenrather Straße car park

The heath landscape is not only the second largest nature reserve in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also the most species-rich.
The Wahner Heide, which belongs to the natural area of the Bergische Heideterrasse, combines swamps, ponds and dunes, wet meadows and dry grassland, streams and alluvial forests.

Today I stood in the middle of a sea of blooming heather. The heather transformed the landscape into a purple ribbon. It was quiet—yet full of life. Simply wonderful!
...and I only walked barefoot through the sand. 😉

I'm a big fan of the Wahner Heide. In spring the gorse blooms here and z. Currently the heather. When I'm out and about here, a stop at the Heidekönig forest restaurant is a must!
