You can see far across the Elbe. Behind the weft you have the Elbe bridge.

The whole thing with a nice glass 🍷, what more could you want. Reserve in good time, especially on weekends.

In the summer of 1590 Duke Franz II commissioned the Fürstengarten on the Freudenberg. Hofgärtner Lilie designed around 1656 the hitherto wild hunter garden in a magnificent, baroque "pleasure garden" after Bohemian model. The resulting representational feature of the dukes of that time became a jewel whose unique beauty was repeatedly described by travelers.

On the southern mountainside a dome vault was created in which festive events took place, the grotto. According to fashion at the time, ancient statues stood in the niches of the round building. For the ruler, the grotto had a special function: Here he met with his respective lover. This half-public, half-private presentation of his love life was a baroque feature in which the ruler sought to underline his position in society through pomp and ceremony. In 1979, the grotto was restored and today houses an Askanierausstellung.

The park was restored in 2005 according to original plans. Today you can still discover some exotic plants in the Fürstengarten, especially worth seeing is the Ginkgo tree. In addition, from the terrace you have a magnificent view over the Elbe.

Prince's Garden Lauenburg

Highlight • Structure

At the top of the Elbe slope, very close to the Lauenburg Palace, is the Fürstengarten, which is protected as a cultural monument. This magnificent, baroque "pleasure garden" from the 16th century is an ideal destination to experience the sparkling hour over the Elbe.
The wonderfully laid out park in the middle of the Lauenburg upper town always invites you for a walk. A very special mood is created when you linger there in the evenings for a sparkling hour, let the view terrace sweep far across the Elbe and the border triangle and enjoy the many colors that the setting sun conjures up on the horizon.

Historic old town of Lauenburg on the Elbe

Highlight • Historical Site

A stroll through the beautiful old town with its pretty half-timbered houses is well worth it. It feels like stepping back in time. Some houses have information boards about their history.

Lauenburg Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The lower town of the old shipping town of Lauenburg is worth a trip. The lower town is at risk from every powerful Elbe flood. The water levels are marked at one point. The last floods were a disaster for every owner. People who had recently renovated had to start all over again.
The lower town is home to many artisans and many restaurants. There is a lot to discover.

It's also worth taking a long walk along the Elbe to the former match factory (now a youth hostel), the winter pictures come from there (05.02.2012). The way back takes you through the old town or vice versa. If you dare, go from the lower town up to the castle. You will be rewarded with a wonderful view at the top.

Lauenburg is the home port of the steam-powered paddle steamer Kaiser-Wilhelm.

The best view of Lauenburg is from Hohnstorf.
