Before the correction of the Aare between Böttstein and the Rhine between 1886 and 1904, this flood plain was a wild and dynamic river landscape with meanders, gravel islands and alluvial forests. Regular floods led to the construction of flood protection dams and the canalization of the Aare.

View of Klingnau Reservoir

A place where many, not just me, like to stop. Good conversations often develop. Beautiful benches, rubbish basket, barbecue area. No matter the time of year or day, no matter what the weather, it is, for me personally, always a place where I like to be and enjoy the beauty. I myself see it as a place of power, a magnet that magically attracts. And I often heard that from random visitors.

Hike starts at Döttingen train station, parking lot (charges apply). The first hour is free, but CHF 5.00 covers the whole day, which is worth it.

This hike can be done all year round and is really easy. Ideal for families and also for people who own a dog. Various species of birds can be observed along the entire Klingnau reservoir, which is really beautiful.
The view is even more beautiful from the bird watching tower, and the different birds can be viewed from a different perspective.

It is important to note that this is a nature reserve and care should be taken to ensure that it is not too noisy, especially if traveling with children. Today I noticed how many people were hiking and at the same time how quiet the area was. You didn't notice that there was actually so much going on.

Highlights I felt:
- Bird watching tower with beautiful views of different bird species.
- Beautiful circular hike around the Klingnauer reservoir.

FYI: Easy hike
Difficulty level: T1 (hiking)

The Klingnau reservoir is an artificially dammed lake in the Swiss canton of Aargau. It is located in the Jura north of the so-called water castle of Switzerland, on the lower reaches of the Aare just before it flows into the Rhine and between the town of Klingnau on the right bank and Böttstein and Leuggern on the left bank of the river.
It is nice to walk all the way around here. It is very good for walking with children and strollers. A lot of water birds can be observed here. Take a pair of binoculars with you. It is worth it.

The reservoir was "discovered" by ornithologists as early as 1938, and since the early 1940s the number of observers, especially on weekends, has steadily increased.
Even in winter people come and do their rounds around the lake and enjoy the variety of bird life that settles here.

The reservoir was "discovered" by ornithologists as early as 1938, and since the early 1940s the number of observers flocking here, especially on weekends, has steadily increased. Over the years, more than 650,000 observations have been made in the archives of the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach and by various private individuals.
