Limburg Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

A beautiful town on the Lahn River with a fantastic old town! From here, you get your first glimpse of the cathedral – quite impressive!

Limburg Cathedral, also known as St. George's Cathedral, towers above the old town of Limburg. The high location on the rocks above the Lahn ensures that Limburg Cathedral is noticeable from afar. Today the building is considered to be one of the most perfect creations of late Romanesque architecture. However, elements of the early Gothic can already be seen.
History
It is no longer possible to precisely determine when the first church was built on the rock above the Lahn. Archbishop Hetti von Trier (814-847) is said to have consecrated a St. George's Church in "Lympurgensis". However, this construction is no longer verifiable.
The first verifiable church on the Limburg rock was built by the Count of Niederlahngau Konrad Kurzbold. The deed of donation for founding the monastery was issued by King Ludwig the Child on February 10, 910. Inside the present church you can still find the layout of the original building, so it must have been a pillar basilica.
A third previous building was possibly consecrated in 1058, but this no longer exists today.
The laying of the foundation stone of today's Limburg Cathedral is not known. Investigations of the wood used in the cathedral, however, provide information about the construction data. Estimates suggest that construction began between 1175 and 1200. The inauguration took place in 1235 by the Archbishop of Trier Theoderich von Wied. The builder of today's cathedral is also no longer known. A lead reliquary identifies a certain Heinrich as the donor. It could be Count Heinrich II. (Nassau) because he held the upper bailiwick during this period. However, it is quite certain that the Limburg merchants made a significant contribution to the construction. The cathedral is dedicated to St. George and Nikolaus von Myra.

View of Limburg Cathedral

Highlight • Viewpoint

Very nice view from the Lahn to the Limburg Cathedral. Be sure to visit the city center with its many half-timbered houses. The squares in the historic city center with the many cafés invite you to linger. Absolutely worth seeing!

From here to Eschenau, the cycle path is expected to be closed until September 2023 due to the risk of breakage.

The lower part of the Kerkerbach cycle path is certainly one of the most beautiful cycle paths in the Limburg-Weilburg district. The route of the Kerkerbachbahn, which has been shut down for decades, is partly used. The trail is in good condition and passes through shady forest and short stretches through open fields.

Former iron ore mine 'Eisensegen'

Highlight • Structure

It is a former tunnel, in the former brown iron, and later iron ore was mined. In 1940, the operation was finally discontinued.

Christianstollen mouth

Highlight • Structure

Old gallery portal of the Christianstollen. The Christian tunnels were used to transport ores from other mines. The ores were sorted nearby and transported via a private track to Christianshütte station. In 1931 the mining of ore over the Christian tunnel was discontinued.
The water that comes out of it is very ferrous "drinking water" (at your own risk ;-)).
