Mastbos

Highlight • Forest

The Mastbos, built by Hendrik III of Nassau, is also called the 'backyard of Breda'. You walk from the Ginneken district straight into the forest. Residents of Breda, but also many nature seekers from abroad, use the forest for walking and cycling, for sports and relaxation or to simply enjoy nature.
At over 500 years old, this 'royal backyard' is one of the oldest coniferous forests in the Netherlands and, after the Wouwse Plantage, the oldest cultivated forest in our country. Count Henry III of Nassau had the forest created in 1515 with seed from the Scots pine from Nuremberg, Germany. The Mastbos was a production forest. The wood was used in the renovation of Breda Castle, for the Spanish fleet and later for the masts of VOC ships. The Nassaus also used it as a hunting ground.

Lakefront picnic spot in Mastbos

Highlight • Rest Area

At the intersection of Verlengde Lange Dreef and Schapendreef is this spacious picnic table. At the moment a view of a large part that is under water.

A beautiful footpath across the heath. Not only a nice way to explore this area, but also good for nature because the heath is not trampled. It is especially beautiful here at sunset. Halfway along the path there is a bench to enjoy the view around you

The area measures 180 ha, of which 100 ha is owned by Staatsbosbeheer, 60 ha by the municipality of Breda and 20 ha by Defense. The last part is occasionally used as a training area.

The area contained an agricultural enclave of 65 hectares that was leased by Staatsbosbeheer until 2008. In 2010, this area was returned to nature, whereby the nutrient-rich top layer was removed and the water management was adjusted, resulting in the creation of a fen again.

The area consists of heathland, partly planted with Scots pine.

In the south the area connects to the Galderse Meren, and in the north to the Mastbos. To the east of the Galderse Heide lies the river valley of the Mark.

I think a little less water would be better for some trees, but it would still be a beautiful sight.
