Ascent to Lagos de Covadonga

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The climb up to Lagos de Covadonga has become one of the most known climbs from 'La Vuelta'. The road is a dream ascend through a long valley and luckily, no more private vehicles are allowed to drive through after 9am. Nevertheless, busses keep on driving up and down bringing visitors to and from the lakes—a little annoying if cycling in the summer season.

This 14km road ascends around 1000m and some stretches hit up to a 15% gradient. But hey, don't be pressure by the speedy cyclists. Take your time and rest on the few viewpoints to enjoy the area. Oh! And don't forget to fill up your water bottles since there's no fountains until the top.

The best time to visit Lake Enol is during the summer months of July to September, when the weather is pleasant and the lake is not frozen. The views of the lake and the surrounding mountains are stunning. The scenery is particularly beautiful in the early morning when the mist rises from the lake.
