Fort Henricus

Highlight • Historical Site

A visit to the restored Fort Henricus is a step back in time. This fort was part of the West Brabant Waterline and the Southern Waterline. It defended the city and port of Steenbergen and the inundation lock. Climb the lookout tower 'de Liniekijker' on the fort! From here you have a fantastic view of the star-shaped fort and the vast polders of West Brabant.

Historical significance: Fort Henricus in Steenbergen could accommodate up to 450 soldiers. With 11.5 hectares, this Hendrik was one of the largest forts in the Southwest of the Dutch Republic! Fort Henricus was recently renovated, so that hikers and water sports enthusiasts can browse and relax to their heart's content. Climb the lookout tower at the entrance to the fort and enjoy the view of the most beautiful spot on the Vliet!

A plaything between the Spanish troops and the Dutch, that was Steenbergen. Time and again, the fortified town was conquered and plundered. Until 1627, because from then on Fort Henricus in Steenbergen protected the harbour and the lock. That lock was important for the inundation. The hornworks, bastions and moat of Fort Henricus made Steenbergen an impregnable fortress. In 1809, Napoleon prepared his cannons for the last time, out of fear of a British invasion. Fort Henricus was demolished shortly afterwards.

The Steenbergse Harbour - Quay

Highlight • Structure

The Quay was formed in the years 1630-1631, after the harbour had been moved from the Oostdam to its current location. The name is derived from the revetment and water barrier. The Steenbergse Haven or Kaai, is the name of the city and marina of Steenbergen.

The oldest part of the harbour dates from the 14th century. The excavated course to the Vliet is younger and is a former part of the fortifications of Steenbergen. The former Fort Henricus at the mouth of the harbour belonged to the same fortifications. Before the reclamation of the Graaf Hendrikpolder, the area around Fort Henricus was a mudflat and gorzen area. The harbour canal to the current harbour is the same as to the old harbour and was closed in 1538 by the reclamation of the aforementioned polder and reopened in 1580.

Until the 1970s, the harbour was heavily used by cargo ships that brought sugar beets to the sugar factory located in Steenbergen. In the middle part of the harbour are so-called water houses. These are houses with their own or shared jetty on the waterfront.
Behind this is the marina, which consists of approximately 160 berths. Behind that is the old city harbour with around thirty berths. This part of the harbour runs to the Kaaistraat, almost in the centre of Steenbergen.

Old Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Two-storey (former) town hall (1939). Composite complex between Kaaistraat / Visserstraat. Town hall was built in the style of the Delft school. The building has a great craftsmanship appearance, partly due to the use of traditional building materials. The coat of arms of the city, with baronial crown and hiding mermaids, the dates 1272 - 1939. Since 2011 it has been privately owned and under monumental supervision converted into a residence, gallery, studio and various authentic spaces, whereby the old elements have been preserved and made visible again where necessary. The Wedding Hall has also been completely restored in the old style.

Statue of the Herald, blowing a trumpet. The statue was made by Leon Vermunt. The Herald represents the old town crier,

Steenbergsche Vliet

Highlight • River

The Steenbergsche Vliet is a nature reserve that mainly consists of reed marshes. The area is now again in open connection with the Volkerak, after the opening of the lock complex at Benedensas.
The nature reserve is a paradise for water birds and an ideal spawning ground for fish, including carp and pike-perch. Since the nineties, the area has become a paradise for (water) recreation.

Beneden Sas Restaurant

Highlight • Restaurant

Beneden Sas is a restaurant with an excellent small menu. On the gravel route that I drove, I didn't actually come across any catering establishments afterwards, so this is a good place to recuperate. The toastie and the 0.0 weizen came in handy :-)
