Mr. Robert Retzmann worked in a quarry while in Russian captivity and became seriously ill. He vowed that upon his return home, he would erect a wayside shrine in honor of Saint Jude Thaddeus. This apostle is often implored for help in desperate situations. Robert Retzmann was one of the last prisoners of war to return home. He then erected this wayside shrine himself. The Catholic parish church “St. Vincentius” at Hauptstraße 65 in Wershofen was dedicated to St. Vincentius, who was born in the second half of the 3rd century and died as a martyr under Diocletian’s persecution in 304. The current church was built between 1953 and 1955 on the site of its predecessor.
