Saint Matthias is one of the twelve apostles from the inner circle of Jesus' disciples, but unlike the others, he was not appointed to this office by Jesus himself. After Jesus' betrayal by Judas Iscariot and the subsequent crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the eleven remaining apostles prayed to the Holy Spirit and chose a new twelfth apostle. The lot fell to Matthias, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament (Acts 1:15-26). His feast day is May 14, or February 24 in German-speaking regions. He is buried in the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Matthias in Trier, the only apostle's tomb north of the Alps, and a number of Saint Matthias Confraternities (SMB) regularly make pilgrimages there.

The first name John has been widespread since biblical times, and so it should not surprise us to find a whole series of blessed and saints with this name over the two millennia of Christianity. At the threshold from the Old to the New Testament we encounter John the Baptist (also John Baptist), to whom most of the John churches are dedicated. But one of the four men who wrote the New Testament gospels also bears this name. This church in Dernau is dedicated to him, JOHN THE EVANGELIST. A long church tradition has regarded the evangelist as identical with the apostle John mentioned in the Bible, but this is doubted in modern biblical scholarship. “The Gospel of John exerts a peculiar fascination. It is difficult to escape its solemn, sometimes mystical language.
