Drawbridge at the city entrance of Dokkum

Dokkum's town hall is located on the Zijl, the former sea lock, and was built between 1607 and 1610. It features a beautiful carillon.

The location of today's drawbridge on the way to the center of Dokkum was originally one of four gates to the fortress of Dokkum.

Installed as part of the art project "Hidden Past" following the redevelopment of Dokkum's city center. The cast-iron shell-like shape features the contours of the old city walls. The city's coat of arms, with moon and stars, is depicted in the stainless steel countershape. Sunlight shines through the shell's cutout, forming a kind of sundial inside the cast-iron shape.

Woudpoortbrug, one of the four city gates, was located here. At 9:50 PM, the city bells were rung to warn that the gates were closing. People outside the gates then had ten minutes to enter. Even today, the bells are rung at 9:50 PM in Dokkum to honor this tradition. The gate served as the overland connection to the south of Friesland.
