The Olen forests are predominantly coniferous. A large portion is owned by Brabant Water, which operates a water extraction area there. Scattered parcels are owned by Staatsbosbeheer (State Forestry Service). To the west lies the new Mosbulten nature reserve, consisting of fens, marshland, and deciduous trees. The Sonse Heide is a unique natural area between Son and Best, where forests, heathland, and drifting sands intersperse. At the heart of this area lie the sand dunes, a reminder of a time when the wind had free rein and stirred the sand. These drifting sands still create a unique, almost desert-like landscape in the heart of Brabant.
