Nice quiet place. Great bike trails. A lot of nature. The Gouwzee is the body of water between the mainland of Waterland and Marken, a former island, now a peninsula, which has been connected to the mainland by a causeway since 1957. Next to Marken are the town of Monnickendam and the village of Volendam on the Gouwzee. The Gouwzee is characterized by shallow and clear water. It is part of the Markermeer nature reserve. Therefore, nature conservation laws such as the Birds and Habitats Directives apply to the Gouwzee. In late summer many crowned ducks gather in the Gouwzee to prepare for autumn migration. The water is popular with water sports enthusiasts such as sailors and surfers.

The Petersburch in Edam is the former regional district office for post and telegraphy with a building dating from 1889 designed by architect and government architect Cornelis Hendrik Peters (1847-1932). After the PTT's change of direction made this special national monument vacant, the building served as a museum for a number of years. The building was designed for museum operations from 2001 to 2004 with a great sense of quality in the spirit of the architect C.H. Peters completely restored with many original details restored. The lighthouse is still scaffolded. It can also only be viewed from a distance as it is privately owned. The owner clearly points out the private property with a large gate and several prohibition and information signs. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful spot, a great lighthouse and the beach in front of it is just great. Seating and a rest area are available. Great for taking a break and refreshing yourself.

After a quiet bike ride towards Edam, suddenly this harbor with shops, restaurants and stalls and a lot of tourists everywhere. Nice but almost too much. There are bathing opportunities right next to the harbor.
