Get off at the port of Volendam for a nice walk. There are many cozy shops with many souvenirs and of course fresh fish and fried mussels. When visiting Volendam, a photo in traditional clothing is a mandatory number!

After a quiet bike ride towards Edam, suddenly this harbor with shops, restaurants and stalls and a lot of tourists everywhere. Nice but almost too much. There are bathing opportunities right next to the harbor.

Nice quiet place. Great bike trails. A lot of nature.
The Gouwzee is the body of water between the mainland of Waterland and Marken, a former island, now a peninsula, which has been connected to the mainland by a causeway since 1957.
Next to Marken are the town of Monnickendam and the village of Volendam on the Gouwzee.
The Gouwzee is characterized by shallow and clear water. It is part of the Markermeer nature reserve. Therefore, nature conservation laws such as the Birds and Habitats Directives apply to the Gouwzee. In late summer many crowned ducks gather in the Gouwzee to prepare for autumn migration.
The water is popular with water sports enthusiasts such as sailors and surfers.

Volendam was created after a new harbor was dug between Edam and the Zuiderzee in 1357. The old harbor mouth was filled up and Volendam was created on the new dam that was constructed here. People from all over the world visit Volendam for the traditional costumes and the harbor.

People sometimes think that the Volendam traditional costume is our national costume, but like everywhere, natives in traditional costume are becoming increasingly scarce. However, you can dress up in these clothes in various places and have them photographed. Especially in the summer it is teeming with tourists

Volendam grew, partly thanks to Leendert Spaander, to become one of the most important artist colonies in the Netherlands. Hundreds of artists moved to the fishing village and painted the picturesque harbor, traditional costumes and the narrow streets of Het Doolhof.

The Spaander family offered these artists models, housing and studio space. In gratitude, many artists donated the paintings they produced. This created an extensive collection, with big names such as Paul Signac. Many paintings can still be admired in Hotel Spaander.
