Nice quiet road. The asphalt is a bit less

The old road to the bridge over the North Holland Canal.

The drawbridge, which you usually ignore...the route always goes over the dike.

Mariakapel De Keins near Schagen is a special place of silence, and is located on an ancient pilgrimage route. The white plastered chapel with its graceful statue of Mary stands on a small mound and offers a view over the vast North Holland polder landscape.

I did the tour yesterday and discovered that the recommended route is outdated. Several bike paths have been demolished and replaced with new ones, which aren't signposted. You have to search for them, but it's worth it. And always remember: if there's a dead-end sign, you can't go any further. Still worth seeing!

From Warboys airfield, ND357 departed on 14 January 1944 at 16:45 towards Braunschweig, Germany. After the bombing, the aircraft was shot down on the return flight by the Messerschmitt Bf 110G of Oberleutnant Dietrich Schmidt, who was operating from Leeuwarden. From the east, the burning bomber flew low over Kolhorn, between the church and the then primary school. The Lancaster crashed at 20:35 in the ditch, almost against the dike. The bomber had a very experienced crew on board. Five crew members had one or more awards and six had completed more than thirty missions. Mansfield and Alexander even more than fifty missions. The entire crew was killed and lies at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery near Bergen op Zoom. Five are buried together in one grave.
