This washing fountain was built in the early years of the 18th century by the community of Schmitshausen and was used for around 200 years. The laundry, which was mainly made of linen, was dried on the "bleaching meadows" at the upper end of this valley below the path that leads past the current youth campsite.

The Schmitthausen "laundries" used to bring their laundry to the two wash troughs carved out of the existing rock. All the more astonishing that the way home was very steep and certainly brutally difficult... 💪🏻

Kneysvilere, also called Kneysviler or Kneysweiler Mühle, used to be a stately ban mill for the towns of Maßweiler, Reifenberg, Schmitshausen and Oberhausen, which was mentioned as a manorial mill as early as 1440. A wonderful opportunity to rest in summer.
