Brixen Cathedral Square is quite large for a medieval town. As the city's ruler, the bishop was always keen to ensure the square remained undeveloped, so as not to obstruct the view of the cathedral and the adjacent bishop's palace. When the emperor passed through in the Middle Ages, he and his entourage could pitch their tents in the spacious square. Even today, processions, celebrations, and important events are held in Cathedral Square.
